On September 15, 2001 around 2AM, a collision caused a 240-foot section of the Queen Isabella Causeway to collapse into the Laguna Madre bay. 4 barges being pushed by a tugboat crashed into a support column of the causeway. The impact caused two 80-foot sections of the bridge to immediately fall, followed later by a third. The accident created a large gap at the highest point of the bridge, making it impossible for approaching motorists to see the danger. Several cars drove into the 85-foot drop ▶1:04・
